25 August 2010 – The European Commission reacts to Romas’ deportations troughout Europe

After several weeks without any real reaction from the European Union after Romas’ deportations in some EU member States, the EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental rights and Citizenship, Madam Viviane Reding, declared “I expect that all Member States respect the commonly agreed EU rules on free movement, non-discrimination and the common values of the European Union, notably the respect for fundamental rights, including the rights of people belonging to minorities.”.

5 October 2010 – The European Commission presents its plan to amend the legislative framework for data protection

The European Commission unveiled its Communication for a new Data Protection Directive, which has been given the name of “A comprehensive strategy on data protection in the European Union”. This Communication is intented to be the first step in revising the 1995 Directive as to meet new challenges emerging from new technologies such as social networking.
