Citizens’ demonstrations for women’s rights have been successful: Spanish government withdraws draft law restricting abortion

1 October 2014 – On Tuesday, 23 September, the Spanish government announced the withdrawal of the much disputed plans to restrict the Spanish abortion law. In a press release, AEDH considers that the withdrawal of the draft law is an important signal for the rights of women not only in Spain, but all over Europe. AEDH will continue to fight against any regulation that calls into question the ability of women to decide what is right for them.

How many deaths in the Mediterranean Sea will it take?

19 September 2014 – One year ago, AEDH challenged the European Union (EU) and its Member States, asking them to recognise their responsibility in the successive and daily tragedies that swallow thousands of men, women and children at the southern border. In the space of a few days at the end of summer, 500 people disappeared in the waters off Malta and Italy, a further 200 off Libya; since June, this gloomy count would amount to 2,200 people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR). Today, AEDH asks the European Union to stop throwing money into the sea to protect itself, and to start assisting migrants instead, in order for them to regain their dignity and their rights at our borders, that they will be able to reach safely.

Open letter to the Members of the European Parliament: AEDH expresses its opposition to the designation of the Commissioner in charge of education, culture and citizenship

24 Septembre 2014 – In an open letter, AEDH asks the members of the European Parliament not to ratify the nomination of Mr. Navracsics to the function of European Commissioner in charge of education, culture and citizenship. For AEDH, this nomination is contrary to the objectives of education for all, of diverse culture and open citizenship. AEDH also participates in initiatives against this nomination of the civil society organisations having played a crucial role in the European Year of Citizens and of Europe +.

Gaza: after the ceasefire, the EU will pay for not having to make a decision

The European Association for the defence of Human Rights (AEDH) regrets deeply that the EU settled for a wait-and-see statement during the Council’s meeting on August 30th, 2014 even though more than 2000 Palestinians died and more than 10000 have been wounded, and a sustainable and directly negotiated settlement remains unpredictable.
